Christopher Dorner is a former member of the US Navy and a former officer with the LAPD. He's now on the run, suspected of killing three people and threatening many more, including cops and their families. There have been a lot of shocking things about this chase, not least of all the fact that the LAPD has now shot at three people who they thought were Dorner. Dorner is a large, muscular black man. The victims of police assaults due to "mistaken identity" are two Hispanic women and a skinny white man.
But the level of public support that's arisen for Dorner is extremely disturbing. As this local story from Sacramento lays out:
One Facebook page is proclaiming Dorner for president. “We propose electing a man who could no longer sit idly by and watch as malicious tyrants abuse the innocent.”
The description on “We Are All Chris Dorner” chillingly says, “Yes, this is war.”
Nearly 3,000 people like the page “I Support Christopher Jordan Dorner.”And:

All this and more is why Christopher Jordan Dorner, the cop who published a thorough manifesto of his own experiences of racism, corruption and abuse within LAPD, and then appears to have gone on a killing spree specifically targeting cops and their families, has garnered support from a large amount of people. I doubt that any of Christopher Dorner’s supporters rejoice in his alleged murder of Monica Quan and Keith Lawrence. Personally, I find their deaths absolutely abhorrent, sad and disgusting. I’m not a violent person, and I do not support gratuitous violence in any form. This includes, but is not limited to, state-sanctioned violence. I do, however, support the idea of justice and of self defense, particularly given the lack of both of these rights under the current system. It’s not hard to see that when a group of oppressors suddenly become the prey in much the same way as they have preyed upon the most vulnerable and under-privileged members of society, that the oppressed feel vindicated. The oppressed feel that justice is finally being dealt. The oppressed feel that there is some form of defense happening.And then concludes with:
If people have to die so that corruption is eliminated, he accepts this. Just like LAPD accepts this. Just like your government does.
I’m no more scared of Dorner than I am of every cop with a gun in the United States of America. As Malcolm X said, it’s a case of the chickens coming home to roost.Police corruption is a huge problem in America. Too many police officers feel entitled to automatic deference, and resort to violence when they don't receive it. Too many police departments close ranks around their own, and defend them when they commit crimes. Too many police departments punish whistleblowers rather than rewarding them for playing an important role in protecting the public.
But none of that, none of that, justifies hunting down and murdering police officers.
And that's not even the line that Dorner stopped at. It takes a special kind of evil to threaten innocent spouses and children.
