Anonymity and Wikipedia

Larry Sanger, one of the co-founders of Wikipedia, has a good essay up about why Wikipedia's culture of anonymity, especially among its editors (those who resolve conflicts among the many authors), is a terrible thing.

I've never been a fan of internet anonymity. It has its uses, but at best it's a necessary evil. But there's no serious argument to be made that the anonymity of Wikipedia's editors is necessary in any sense of the word. Sanger is right — if the Wikipedia editors want to have the degree of power in the world that their positions bring them, they should have the basic decency to sign their real name to their actions.
