One of the only things sillier than Michigan's practice of electing its judges through "non-partisan" elections is Illinois' practice of electing of electing its judges in overtly partisan races based on electoral districts. But it's the system we're stuck with, so...
Mary Jane Theis has a very strong background. She spent the first ten years of her career as a Public Defender in Cook County, one of those thankless but crucial jobs. Since she left that position in 1983, she has served at every level of Illinois' judiciary. She was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2010 to finish a term, and is now seeking election to that seat.
James Gerard Riley does not appear to have a campaign website, and has only brief responses to the Chicago Tribune's questionaires. He's a judge in the Cook County Probate Court, and he worked in private practice for fifteen years. That's all we really know.
Summary: I'll support Theis. She has a strong background and seems like she would continue to bring a strong and important voice to the Court. Plus, Riley seemingly hasn't bothered to make himself available to the people.
