Michigan 2012 Election: Assorted Results

Yesterday was a good night for Democrats in Michigan, but a mixed bag in terms of actual results. The Democratic candidates swept all three university boards. At the University of Michigan, that's a good thing. At MSU, not so much: one of the Democrats didn't even have a campaign website, and the other was running entirely on his qualifications as a football player. At Wayne State, it's mixed news. O'Brien should be alright, but Trent did almost nothing to earn anyone's vote. Jasti would have been the better choice.

It's hard to believe that this result occurred because of thoughtful (rather than party-line) voting, so let's turn to the Michigan Supreme Court, where at least partisan affiliations are left off the ballot (as well-known as they are to informed voters).

Here again we have mixed results, though these aren't quite so partisan. The full term seats on the Court (the only ones I looked into) went to Markman and McCormack. McCormack will do an excellent job for the state of Michigan, but it's disappointing that someone so biased in favor of law enforcement as Markman was sent back to the Court. At least the two should balance each other.

The ballot measures, however, all went the right way. That is, they were all rejected. Here are the Yes-No margins:

Proposal 1: 48-52
Proposal 2: 42-58
Proposal 3: 37-63
Proposal 4: 43-57
Proposal 5: 31-69
Proposal 6: 40-60

I'm disappointed that an unconstitutional law (Proposal 1) fared the best, though the thorough trouncing of Proposals 5 is a relief. Proposal 6, on the other hand, did disturbingly well. Still, at the end of the day, it's only the results that matter.
